Flea infestation can cause a lot of problems for your pet and to yourself as well.
Adult fleas bite pets and humans causing itching and in some pets severe allergic dermatitis. Your pet will scratch and bite itself which can cause development of bacterial skin infections. In case of very heavy flea infestation your pet can be weak and anemic and in severe cases can even die. Fleas can be a vector of multiple infectious diseases including tapeworms and zoonotic diseases like the bubonic plague.
We strongly advise to prevent and treat flea infestations of your pet.
Flea treatments available at ARAH come in the form of a spot-on applications: liquid placed on the back of the neck on the skin (e.g. Revolution, Frontline, Advantage) and Oral Chews (e.g. Nexgard and Bravecto) These treatments are almost always given monthly. We also have tablets called Capstar (nitenpyram) – which is a fast-acting flea killer given once orally. Capstar needs to be supported with monthly lasting products.
All pets in the household need to be treated against fleas at the same time, for flea medications to be effective.
It is important to address the control of fleas in the environment which includes regular vacuuming and steam-cleaning of carpet and pet bedding, as well as spraying your house with insecticides such as Knockout. The reason for this is the majority of a flea’s life cycle occurs in the pet’s environment.
Please contact us or bring your pet in for treatment as soon as you see fleas or flea dirt on your pet. As well if you observe small rice like looking tape worms around rectal area. Fleas are known to be carrier of tapeworms.
